Musical
Last Saturday night I was so proud of CCS students as they performed in Back to the 80s…..the totally awesome musical. Students have worked for months to learn their lines and lyrics, develop stage presence, build sets and get to know one another to perform as a united group. They did this successfully and in doing so brought the CCS community a great sense of joy.
The audience were delighted with funny one liners from classic 80s tv shows, movie references and a collection of unforgettable 80s songs. It was wonderful to see a group of students come together to achieve success. Every student involved in the musical should be extremely proud of themselves; whether they helped build sets, set up stage props, do the hair and make up of performers or sing, dance, and act. You were all brilliant. I am in awe of your courage. I know you inspired many younger children in the audience who are keen for their opportunity when they come to high school.
Finally huge thanks to Mrs Hoolihan, Mrs Miley-Read and Ms Roberts. The time and effort you gifted to this production is immeasurable. I know students and families will remember this forever. Thank you.
Student Reflection
The musical was such an experience, one I would love to do again. Both Paige and I contributed to the musical back in 2022 when we were only in year 8, now we are here, writing about the musical in 2024 during our last year as CCS students.
Over the course of seven months we went through an exciting process of auditions, designing set pieces, costumes, and singing lessons. And after many rehearsals, the cast was ready for the final performance week. Within this week we practised as real actors and stage managers. Working as a team we managed to create an amazing show that went on for three nights. Despite the mistakes and drama backstage we all persevered and put on an unforgettable show that impacted everyone in the cast and crew positively. I, as stage manager, was able to interact and learn about people from the grades below and understand the community better. Paige as Tiffany Houston was able to step outside of her box and put on a performance of a lifetime with the help of her fellow cast members. All in all the experience was certainly exciting and a great way for the both of us to spend our last year at CCS doing what we love best and engaging with our peers. We both thank everyone who came to the show and anyone who gave up their time to help during the production. This felt like a lovely goodbye message to all the years below and to encourage people to step out of their comfort zones, to forget their worries and just have fun.

Play
Play is an important part of life for children, young people and adults. It helps us to relax, supports positive mental health, is good for physical health, develops cognitive, social and emotional skills. Play doesn’t need to be costly or complicated. Children exploring the backyard, telling stories with puppets, kicking a ball, playing with the dog are all healthy, non-technology-based play opportunities. If you join your child in their play, it also helps to foster language development and support positive relationships.
The Raising Children Network has some easy to read information about the importance of play and some videos sharing play ideas for children. I encourage you to have a look to help your child be prepared for the next school holiday period.
Warm Regards
Julie
Kindergarten News
Kinder has had a lot of fun in the first half of this term. We have enjoyed getting know our new teachers and are enjoying a variety of new fun activities.
We have also participated in many fun events including, 100 Days of School, NAIDOC performances, footy clinics, the athletics carnival, gross motor, and Book Week.
100 Days of School
Our kindergarten students had such a nice day celebrating their 100 hundred days of school. They participated in lots of activities and dress up as 100-year-old people. It was a great way to start the term.
Science
This term students have been learning all about ways that things move. In Gross Motor they have been exploring with how to move their bodies through rolling, jumping, running, balancing crawling, hopping…
Book Week
This year’s theme was Reading is Magic. We were so impressed by all the amazing costumes that the kinder students dressed up in. It was truly a magical day.
Boxing Club - Knockout News
A massive shoutout to STING Sports who have provided the CCS Junior Campus with a multitude of gloves for the Boxing program! We greatly appreciate their generous donation and look forward to working with them further to expand our range of equipment.
Our 5/6 students in particular are super excited to have quality gear of their own after previously having to share from the Senior Campus. Their faces lit up and they were quick and keen to test the products as soon as the package arrived.
All this wouldn't have been possible however without the incredibly helpful and dedicated member of the P&C team, Danielle! She worked tirelessly to contact multiple organisations, sharing the success of the boxing club, and asking if they wanted to help aid our young ones in this awesome program.
Thanks again to STING Sports for taking this up and providing CCS with amazing support, and another thank you as well to Danielle for going above and beyond!

Congratulations
I am thrilled to share some fantastic news that reflects the incredible talent and dedication within our school. Our very own Hassan Tabaja has achieved an outstanding accomplishment by becoming the Australian National Judo Champion in the Under 15 U66kg division!
Hassan's journey to this title is a testament to his hard work, perseverance, strength, and skill. His achievement not only brings pride to himself but also to the entire CCS community. It's moments like these that highlight the extraordinary potential we have within our school and remind us of the greatness that can be achieved through dedication and passion.
Let's all take a moment to celebrate Hassan's success and recognise the hard work and commitment he has shown. This is a remarkable milestone and an inspiring example for us all. Who knows? We might just be witnessing the rise of a future Olympian right here at CCS.
Please join us in congratulating Hassan on this incredible achievement and wishing him continued success in his future endeavours.

Year 8 News
Science:
During science, Year 8 students were conducting practical experiments. One in particular was to see how potassium aluminium sulphate crystals reacted to boiling water. To do this, students needed to boil water while also having three different beakers. These beakers either contained cotton, ice water or was empty (containing air). Students put the boiled water and the potassium aluminium sulphate crystals into test tubes, covering them up with a cotton ball to hold in the substance and to not allow contamination from air or any external substances.
The results varied with the purpose to show the crystals stick to the test tube and/or change into shapes. Some groups, however, found that their crystals disintegrated, potentially due to cold water being added into the boiling water or other versions of contaminations.
Well done to Year 8 students for being safe during these practical science experiments, showcasing they are mature enough to keep doing fun things like this!
HPE:
We spent our first three weeks going through techniques for all of our track and field events for the carnival day. Each student had multiple attempts at the ‘throws’; Javelin, Discus and Shotput. As teachers corrected technique and students helped each other out, the throwing events were soon mastered but all! We then moved on to the jumping events; High Jump, Long Jump and Triple Jump, finishing off the events with 100m Sprints and Relays. As the HPE team, we are confident we will have some Year 8 representatives at the regional level. Week 4 saw the beginning of sport and skill specific lessons, with a focus on transferring learned skills across multiple sports. An example of this is students playing basketball, then playing soccer and for a lesson combining the two sports to use the same skills while quickly transitioning from soccer rules to basketball rules in the same game.
HPE have revamped our structure of classes, which Year 8 have taken in their stride. Well done on a great start to HPE this term, Year 8!
English:
Last week in Year 8 English, students were placed into the pressure cooker of a LIVE TV audience. The Year 8 English classes have been learning about News Media and the techniques used to engage, inform and even persuade audiences. Mr Cannell’s class presented a 15 minute news program including 6 news stories to Mrs Catchpole’s class. Students wrote short news scripts and presented them which highlighted their success in writing with structure. As a member of the audience, Ms Turner was very impressed with their news reporter voices, their entertaining and engaging facts and their ability to transition from one story to the next. We look forward to what they can create for their Cartoon Chronicles assignment task at the end of term.
Special Guest Performances:
A huge thank you to Voice of Lele and Mitch Tambo for coming to our school and performing their extraordinary talents while also telling inspirational stories of their lives. Lele talked our community through her family’s history of the refugee story, while also opening our eyes to the culture of her West Papua people. She taught us a song in her language and has us singing along to her drumming and beautiful voice. He and her daughter also did traditional face paint for our female students and traditional arm paint for our male students. It was a fun and educational way to start the day. Lele’s husband Mitch, a finalist in Australia’s Got Talent, performed a highly entertaining concert for us later on the same day, which had students and staff on their feet dancing. It was the Year 8’s that really brought the vibes with Mitch continuously pointing them out and thanking them for their energy. He too taught us some of his Indigenous Gamilaraay language and had us singing along. Thank you so much to this family for teaching us so much while they were here and getting us hyped for the day!
Reminders for Term 3, 2024
- Students have had a few weeks now to get used to the new timetable layout, with Monday’s looking a bit different. Congratulations to students for adapting to the change.
- Track and Field Regionals is Wednesday Week 6.
- Girls Netball Gala Day is Week 7.
- Right Place, Right Time is still really important. Would love to see a higher percentage of students attending all their classes on time and ready to learn.
- No Mobile Phone Policy is going quite well! We appreciate the work on the home front to support this new law that has passed. Friendly reminder that students cannot use their phones to purchase items from the canteen from now on.
- Uniform shop is open Thursday afternoons, however female or non-binary students are able to purchase school appropriate NAVY BLUE shorts with no logo on them if they prefer those over the school shorts. If the student cannot be in uniform, please provide them with a note and have them dress in colours as close to the school uniform as possible.
- Getting changed for practical HPE lessons: Students are required to have 5 items to showcase their organisation skills; change in shirt, appropriate pants/shorts, appropriate footwear, water bottle and hat.
Years 9 & 10 Southside Soccer
I am excited to share an update about our 9/10 soccer team, who represented CCS with remarkable spirit and dedication at Monday’s competition.
Our team played a total of five games. While we drew the first match 0-0 and were unable to secure victories in the remaining four, I want to highlight the incredible effort and sportsmanship demonstrated by all our players. In particular I’d like to commend Will, who truly stood out and held his own with exceptional skill and determination throughout the day.
Sam Hunia and I were deeply impressed by how our team conducted themselves. Despite the results on the scoreboard, our players were outstanding in their sportsmanship, kindness, and respect towards their teammates, teachers, event organisers, competitors, and the public. Their behaviour was a true reflection of the values we strive to instil at CCS.
While we may have come away as the “wooden spoon,” losers (see pic) we take immense pride in the way our team represented our school. Their positive attitude and dedication are what make us proud.
Thank you for your continued support and encouragement.

SC Athletics
2024 Senior Campus Athletics Carnival
The atmosphere buzzed with energy at Woden Park, where bright blue skies and warm sunshine provided the perfect backdrop for the Senior Campus Athletics Carnival. Staff and students proudly donned their house colours, chanted, and cheered in support of the athletes competing fiercely.
The tantalising scent of sizzling sausages wafted through the air, drawing hungry staff and students. Special thanks to Adam Taylor and the Year 10 student volunteers for their hard work at the BBQ.
While the T-Rexes were notably absent this year - perhaps a sign of their extinction - a surprise appearance by a gorilla and a frog added a fun twist to the carnival.
Highlighting the day's excitement was the much-anticipated Staff vs Students Relay. Our Jumbanna and Karingal students put forth outstanding performances, finishing in first and second place, respectively. Meanwhile, the Mullaya staff secured third place, ensuring a spirited competition, and preventing a complete student victory.
Congratulations to all participants who displayed remarkable talent and determination, earning points for their houses by competing in various events.
Here are our champions for 2024:
- 12 years - Keyara M & Todd N
- 13 years - Sophia B & Lachlan L
- 14 years - Zoe B & Levi E
- 15 years - Olivia M & Lemar K
- 16 years - Samantha U, Isaac N & Riley D
- 100m Gift - Amber W & Malik A
A special mention goes to Jade Reid for her exceptional organisation and coordination of the Senior Campus Athletics Carnival. Her dedication and hard work behind the scenes ensured that everything ran smoothly, allowing both staff and students to fully enjoy the day.
