Welcome Back
Welcome back to term 4. We hope that you have all had a great break and that you were able to enjoy some sunshine! Our Staff returned on Monday to plan for our busy term 4 ahead. It was great to see our students return on Tuesday excited to tell us about their coastal adventures, time with friends and camping with family. Term 4 is set to be an exciting one with excursions, SC ODE camps, end of year events and transitions to preschool, kindergarten, year 7 and year 11. With so much happening, please ensure that you stay up to date with events through the school website, Facebook page and the newsletter.

The ACT Election is Saturday 19 October, Caroline Chisholm Junior Campus will once again be a polling site. The P&C will be running a Democracy Sausage and Bake Sale, they will be selling bacon and egg rolls (until sold out), variety of baked goods (until sold out) and sausages all day. Come down and vote between 8am and 2.30pm to grab a treat at the same time. If you are able to help out at the BBQ please sign up at the following link https://volunteersignup.org/3WLPJ We would like to thank all the volunteers supporting the P&C with organising, baking and running this event.
World Teachers’ Day
Internationally World Teachers' Day is celebrated annually in October and in Canberra, will be celebrated on Friday 25 October this year. This initiative provides a great opportunity to thank a teacher for all that they do in the holistic development of your child or young person. Our teachers enrich the lives of children in many ways, from providing daily education at school, to attending camps over several days and nights, to planning enriching experiences through excursions. Why not drop your young person’s teacher an email, send in a note or just tell them about the difference they make in your child’s life!
Kind Regards,
Nicky
Junior Campus: Term 4
JC Term 4 News
Welcome back to term 4, we are excited to dive into the last term for the school year. It will be a busy term with several events, including Gala Days, Aqua Safe, excursions, end of year celebrations and of course teachers will be writing semester 2 reports on your child’s growth. This term we finish on Tuesday 17 December, so with week 10 being a short week there is lots to pack into the term. Our focus will be on staying engaged in learning, celebrating our students’ successes for 2024 and supporting our students with transitions for 2025.
JC Classes for 2025
This term staff will be working on class placements for 2025. A great deal of time and effort is involved in planning our classes each year. Staff have an in-depth knowledge of ways to enhance learning, and they will use this knowledge to support the placement of students in classes for 2025. This information combined with student strengths, personalities, friendships and student support requirements will be taken into consideration. Students on our junior campus will be asked to complete a sociogram where they are asked to list five children they work well with and supports their learning. Students will then be placed into classes with at least one child from their list. We work closely with our preschool educators to best plan for kindergarten placements as well.
If you believe your child’s placement needs special consideration, please let Nicky Smith know in writing by Friday 1 November. This can be done via email nicky.smith@ed.act.edu.au or by making an appointment through the front office. It is imperative that all requests are made directly to Nicky so that she is able to ensure appropriate considerations are made. Please remember that requests cannot be made for specific teachers. Junior Campus families will be informed at the end of January 2025 through teacher introductory letters as to staffing arrangements and class placements for 2025.
Carpark Safety
The beginning of the term is a good time to remind everyone about the importance of carpark safety, particularly during the peak times at drop off and pick up. Please remember to use designated parking areas, follow the speed limit, and be mindful of pedestrians. We also encourage you to talk to your children about being alert and cautious around moving vehicles. Simple conversations about crossing at safe points and staying close to adults can make a big difference in keeping everyone safe. Let’s work together to ensure our school carpark remains a safe space for all.
Supervision before school
We kindly remind all parents and carers that school supervision does not begin until 8:30 AM each day. For the safety and well-being of all students, we ask that children do not arrive at school before this time, as there will be no staff available to supervise them. Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring our school remains a safe environment for everyone.
New Sensory Play Space
New Sensory Play Space on JC
Over the break there was some visible progress happening in our new Sensory Play Space outside of the Flex unit. Work will continue over the term ready for opening in 2025. Our students, especially our Flex students, have enjoyed watching the construction and discussing their wondering what will be included in this space.

Managing Challening Behaviours
Managing challenging behaviours at CCS
At Caroline Chisholm School, we believe in fostering a positive learning environment for every student. In line with our mission to collaborate P-10 to deliver holistic learning experiences, we use a tiered behaviour management system. This system provides various levels of support tailored to meet each student’s unique needs. Our decision-making flowchart ensures that each step is clear, consistent, and focused on student growth. Guided by our vision of championing excellence and equity, we maintain high expectations that encourage perseverance and personal growth. Through this approach, we empower respectful, responsible learners to meet the challenges of a changing world.
At Caroline Chisholm School, we understand that not all behaviours are the same, which is why we handle minor and major behaviours differently. Minor behaviours, such as classroom disruptions or not following instructions, are managed within the classroom by teachers, using gentle reminders or short interventions and logical consequences to guide students back to their learning.
For more significant behaviours, like repeated rule-breaking or unsafe actions, a more structured response is required. These major behaviours involve leadership staff and may result in additional supports or consequences aimed at helping the student learn from the situation. Our tiered approach ensures that all behaviours are addressed fairly, helping students grow in responsibility and respect while maintaining a positive and safe learning environment for everyone.
