World Teacher Day
World Teachers' Day is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the incredible work teachers do every day. The teaching profession is amazing, inspiring, rewarding, exhausting, frustrating, fun, energising, tiring, the profession to create all other professions. Last Friday we celebrated the inspiring group of teachers at CCS. The Caroline Chisholm community is lucky to have so many passionate, dedicated and resilient teachers. I feel very lucky to work with such an amazing group of professionals.
Celebrating our wonderful family volunteers
On Thursday 24 October the CCS P&C ran a highly successful Halloween disco on the junior campus. The hall and courtyard were transformed with eery, creepy and fun decorations, the canteen was busy selling goodies, a pizza dinner was enjoyed by many, there was a special Halloween themed photo station and then there was the music, dancing and running. At the JC assembly on Friday, I was told by one young person “it was the best night of my life.” The disco was certainly enjoyed by the vast majority of students on the JC.
Events like this do not happen without an enormous amount of work from our P&C members and other family volunteers. CCS is lucky to have such an active, supportive family network who are willing to offer events such as this. We can’t thank you enough for your time and efforts.
Uniform reminder
Now the days are getting warmer it is time to check your child/young person’s school uniform. Have they had a growth spurt? Does their summer uniform need a refresh?
A reminder that all students are required to wear a CCS shirt, school shorts/skorts/skirt/dress and hat each day. Shorts are required to be ‘school appropriate’ length, bike shorts or very short leggings are not part of the CCS uniform.
The P&C operates a Uniform Shop, located on the Senior Campus. The shop opening hours are Tuesdays from 8.00 - 10:00am and Thursdays from 2.30-4.30pm, during school terms. Please use this link to book a time slot.
If you are unable to visit the shop, uniforms can be purchased via email to the shop or through Flexischools. All orders outside of shop hours will be taken to the relevant junior/senior campus on Tuesdays after closing and Thursdays prior to opening unless informed otherwise.

Bidjiwang Preschool Term 4 News
As we enter our last term of preschool, it is exciting to reflect on the distance travelled for each one of our pre-schoolers over the year. It is also a time to look forward, transitioning to the next stage and celebrating this milestone. We will have our official Kindergarten orientation sessions on the Wednesday morning of weeks 5 and 7. Children will arrive at preschool as usual and we will walk them up to spend some time in the kindergarten classroom, before returning to preschool for the remainder of the day. New students to CCS will also be joining the group for these times. We will visit the kindergarten playground to spend time with the current kindergarten students during break, continue visits on alternating weeks for assembly and library, and our weekly gross motor sessions.
Each week, we have years 3-6 student helpers. This has been a great way to make connections with older students (who can often appear big and scary at the start of kindergarten). During the last two weeks of gross motor for the year, weeks 7 & 8, we will be inviting siblings to join us to be our helpers.
On Friday 13th December, our last day of preschool, we invite families to join us for a family picnic to celebrate our year together in preschool. Families are invited to bring a picnic lunch, and we will have a small graduation presentation.
These are some of the upcoming events for Term 4. So far this term, we have been observing and looking after mini beasts in our natural environment, talking about how things grow and change, exploring creating art using different media including clay, and learning about and comparing letters in our names. We have been reading the book Wombat Stew, discussing how we know how the characters might be feeling. We have been looking closely to find full stops as well as acting out the story using drama and dance.

The students in the spotlight for Weeks 2 and 3 are:

Spotlight on Staff - Andrea Irving, Year 3/4 Teacher, 3-6 PLT Coordinator

Describe your role at CCS.
I am a classroom teacher and learning team coordinator for years 3-6.
What do you enjoy about working with children/young people?
The “a-ha” moment when a child understands a concept and watching them develop as a person. I love it when they come back and see me after they have left the JC and tell me how they are going 😊
Describe your work in education in three words.
Challenging, rewarding, exciting
What are your strengths? What are you passionate about?
My strengths are building relationships with students so that we can achieve the maximum in their learning while they are in my class.

I only started teaching in 2013!
Year 7 News
English
If you step into an English classroom at the moment, you will see everyone with their nose in a book! Year 7s are either reading ‘A Monster Calls’ or ‘A Sky So Heavy’, depending on their class. I happened to walk into Mr Cannell's class the other day and you could have heard a pin drop, as every single one of them were engaged in their reading.
Once their book is complete, their main assessment task will be to create a 1-page infographic poster that describes the book, unpacks the characters and touches on key ideas. I have heard from the teachers that students are excited about this task, and that engagement with their reading is high.
Science
Year 7s are the adventurers of time and space in their Science classes as their current focus in class is on Space and its relationship to Earth. They are looking to the stars and seeking out answers to such questions as ‘What causes ‘days’?’, ‘How do seasons work?’, ‘What happens when there is an eclipse?’ and ‘What’s the deal with tides?’.
This sense of exploration and wonder will continue on to their main assessment, where they can choose any topic of interest within the science sphere, and conduct a deep-dive enquiry. Perhaps someone will discover the answers to the big questions - ‘Could Superman really spin the world backwards to turn back time?’, ‘Does the man on the moon receive quality wifi?’ and ‘If there’s a new moon every month, where does the old one go?’.
HASS
The focus in HASS has been civic studies, and students have been looking at the political landscape of Australia, how do you vote and why people should have a voice. Students were asked to create their own political party with a key message, to present a matching flyer to sell their points and then to present and convince the class to vote for their party. They then had to apply their party to their teacher and their names were put on the mock voting ballot.
Some of the highlights include:
- Watermelon Lovers
- The Tree Factor
- Non-murderous Ice Cream Chisholm Party
- The Courts Party
- The Ballers Party
- The Active Persons Movement Party
I have only heard wonderful things about how all students threw themselves into this project, dressing up, creating their posters and convincing their peers by standing at the front of the class to present their case. Watch out Parliament House, the Year 7s will be taking over very soon!
Maths
What are the odds that you will drop a piece of vegemite toast and it lands spread side up? Ask the Year 7s!
They have been looking at probability in class, enjoying hands-on activities including dice rolling games and studying the probability of how often they can pull certain things out of a paper bag.
I have talked in-depth with the Year 7 Maths teachers, and they have an impressive range of resources available to students on google classroom, from textbooks to videos that breakdown concepts. Mathspace works hand in hand with these resources, so if any Year 7s are struggling with a concept, they have a lot of information that can help break it down!
I always remind them to touch base with their Maths teachers and ensure they are taking responsibility for conducting some work on their Mathspace at home. I know so many students do this, which is amazing and shows the perseverance of the cohort.
Electives
Students are currently experiencing their 4th elective of the year, between Media, Music, Drama, Art and Woodwork. It is such a privilege to watch the creative development of the Year 7s, as they explore Stop/Start Animation, Rock Beats on the drum kits and Melodrama on the stage.
Heading into year 8, students will soon have the chance to choose which electives they would like to take on in year 8. Instead of undertaking a different subject each term, students will write in their priorities for their year long choice out of Dance, Music, Art, Woodwork, Drama and Media. More information will come soon about this exciting transition activity, so watch this space!
The Arts Faculty will be hosting a Big Day In Arts night. We have had some of our lovely Year 7 cohort audition for us, and we will have a variety of musicians, actors and art work as well as the school band performing! Keep your eyes peeled to Facebook for information.
HPE
Students have been focusing on different concepts depending on their class, including striking/fielding, invasion, target and Net/wall. Between these practical classes, students will conduct theory classes which not only cover the theoretical aspects of HPE, but also wellbeing aspect, including topics such as empathy, respect and what happens to your body on the teenage journey.
Year 7 Student Advocates
A massive cheer to the following students for standing up in front of the entire Year 7 body and speaking to all of them! The Student Advocate position is designed to act as a ‘Voice of the People’. They will advocate for change and work to benefit the Year 7 cohort. During the candidates speeches, everyone was quiet and respectful. It was great to see that all candidates were equally supported by the Year 7 cohort as they finished their speeches. What a testament to the pillar of Respect!
The position is yet to be confirmed, but if the calibre of speeches were anything to go by, our leadership team of students from Year 7 will be very strong indeed!
Three cheers to:
- Sanchia Punivai
- Kiki Shuttleworth
- James Joyce
- Sophia Barbour
- Jamie Nordsvan
- Amelia Whitaker-Walshe
Watch this space for our future Year 7 advocates. It'll be a very tight race!
A Bit of Fun…
A bit of competition can be good for the soul, and none quite like the unofficial ‘Arm Wrestling Competition’ of 2024. I went to see why there was a crowd of 7s gathering, and to my surprise there was the most wholesome and respectful game of arm wrestling going on! It was equal opportunity between any students who wanted to step up to the podium and everyone was competing while others cheered them on.
Miriam Miley-Read
