Message from the Principal
Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. At CCS we have been acknowledging Reconciliation Week through different opportunities – a cultural performance by Ryker, boomerang throwing and participation in buroinjin carnival.
On Wednesday, the Melaleuca (Year 3/4) Unit had the pleasure of Solomon and Gabriel Quinn from year 7 coming over to explain and demonstrate boomerang throwing. Solomon and Gabriel are exceptional ambassadors for their culture and are enthusiastic to share their knowledge. The afternoon was a great success with all students (and teachers) having a turn throwing a boomerang. Some throws were very successful, so much so that the roof of the JC playground is now adorned with 5 boomerangs! Special thanks to Candy, our Cultural Integrity Officer, for organising this wonderful opportunity.
The last thing Solomon and Gabriel said before they left was that they would be happy to come over anytime because they love to share their culture with people. My mind and heart nearly burst with appreciation and joy that these young men are so eager to share their culture with the world ❤. Mrs Irving
Last week Adam (the CCS Youth Worker on the SC) took a group of year 7-8 students to participate in the Bouroinjin Competition at Deakin Playing Fields. Having only one reserve and a group that were not even sure of the rules upon arrival, and the fact we had ZERO training sessions we were unsure of how we would hold up against other schools that came wearing football boots and looking ready to go. We won the first two games and lost the third. Students entered the round four game full of energy and beat a much-favoured team quite convincingly, moving the team through to the semi-finals. CCS students won the first semi-final in a tight game and made it to the preliminary final 15 minutes later. The team showed incredible endurance and commitment in this game to make it through to the Grand Final!! In a back-and-forth tussle CCS came from behind to get back to even with a few minutes to go, unfortunately the team lost by a single goal in a game that came down to the wire. It was a game that all players should be extremely proud of, they never gave up.
Adam and Jonah were incredibly proud of every member of the Chisholm team. There were demonstrations of great leadership from the more experienced students and an amazing effort from the team as a whole. I’m sure the students that took part will be very excited to return next year and go one better. Adam
Parent Portal – new communication tool
This term we are introducing a new Parent Portal, a secure online platform used to share student information between you and your child’s teachers.
Using the Parent Portal on your mobile phone, tablet or computer, you will be able to:
- notify us if your child is sick or explain an absence
- book parent-teacher interviews
- receive academic reports
- receive our school newsletter
- receive messages from your child’s teachers
- make payments
- access the school calendar and your child’s student timetable.
You can start the sign up and identity verification process now so you’re ready to go. Head to the Education Directorate website Parent Portal page for all the details.
Parent Portal access
To access Parent Portal you will need to create or have access to an ACT Government Digital Account and complete the level 2 identity verification.
The mobile number, first and last names for your Digital Account must be an exact match for those the school uses to contact you. If you already have a Digital Account in which any of these are different from what’s on the school’s records, you can:
- contact the school to have your mobile number in the school records changed, so you can use your existing Digital Account (recommended), or
- make a new Digital Account just for use with Parent Portal.
You can sign up now and complete the Identity Verification process at any time to get ready for our launch this term.
To complete Identity Verification with your Digital Account, you must provide the details of one primary AND one secondary Australian identity document (e.g. Drivers Licence number, Medicare Number). These identity documents details will be verified against your account name and Date of Birth, using the Australian Government Document Verification Service (DVS).
Primary identification document
- Australian Birth Certificate
- Australian Citizenship Certificate
- Record of Australian Immigration Status (ImmiCard)
- Australian Visa
- Australian Driver Licence
- Australian Change of Name Certificate
- Australian Marriage Certificate
- Australian Passport (current or expired up to 2 years)
Secondary identification document
- Current Australian Medicare Card
- Australian Passport (if it is not used as the primary document)
- Centrelink Concession Card
- Australian Driver Licence (if it is not used as the primary document)
Both primary and secondary identity documents must be in the same name. Details of these identity documents will be verified, using the Australian Government Document Verification Service (DVS) to confirm your first name, last name and date of birth.
If any of the documents have a different name or an incorrect date of birth, you will need to contact the issuing authority for the document (e.g., Medicare, Australian Passport Office, etc) to have it reissued with corrected details.
If you are unable to complete the identification process, it means we are unable to give you access to Parent Portal currently. Please be assured that the school will continue to share all information available in the Parent Portal with you using existing channels.
If you have any questions, please contact the school.
Study Hall
This week the Senior Campus has introduced weekly study sessions focussed on literacy and numeracy consolidation for students in year 7-10. Each year level cohort will participate in a study session one afternoon each week in the library. A number of staff will supervise the sessions and provide support when required. Students will be required to work on key aspects of reading and writing tasks in English and consolidate their maths development using Mathspace. All students are expected to be engaged in independent learning, respecting the rights of peers to learn.
Rostrum
Last Thursday Nicky, Smriti and I were lucky enough to be judges for the year 5/6 Rostrum finals. Students speak for 3 minutes on a selected topic in front of peers. Rostrum judges assess each speech and determine a winner and runner up. On Thursday seven speakers presented their speeches to all year 5/6 students and staff. Students overcame nerves to speak clearly and articulately on various topics. Students used humour, eye contact, facts, gestures, questions, and persuasive language to deliver engaging speeches. Not only were the speakers impressive but the student audience were compassionate and supportive. The overall winner was Mahdi and Tommy the runner up who will move on to represent Caroline Chisholm School at the Quarter finals later in June.
Shoutout to Adrian, Matt, Jake and Adam who took Outdoor Education students on a number of day trips to surf at Broulee in week 3. We received the following email from the surf instructor –
My name is Paul and I was one of the Surf Instructors along with Shane and Sophie from Broulee Surf School to take your Year 9/10 Outdoor Ed students for a surf lesson on Friday 17th May at North Broulee Beach.
I just wanted to pass onto your staff how well your students performed throughout the lesson. They were all fully engaged, displaying excellent behaviour, respect and cooperation throughout the 2 hour lesson. Although some students had surfed before (or had a previous lesson somewhere at some stage); they performed extremely well with the technique we taught them i.e. From stomach to feet with no knees.
It is so wonderful to receive such positive feedback about staff and students from CCS.
Spotlight on Staff - Livia Tigwell, Careers Advisor
How long have you worked at CCS?
I arrived at the Caroline Chisholm School in 2014.
Describe your role at CCS
I have a brilliant role teaching and supporting our students’ career development.
What do you enjoy about working with children/young people?
Young people are fabulous! They are straight forward and helpful, especially with my issues with IT! 😊 Also, importantly, they all actually want to be successful, even though they occasionally make some bad choices, so it is very rewarding trying to get each young person to think about their future options and set them on their way.
Describe your work in education in three words.
incredibly rewarding, challenging
What are your strengths? What are you passionate about?
I hope the CCS community sees my main strength in contributing to youth career development. This is what I am passionate about. I hope to see all high schools with a teacher working full time in careers before I retire, because the qualified career development teacher in this role can explain options, provide hope, open doors, support goal setting and create plans for the future in a way that compliments the work of other staff. It is easy to be passionate about such an exciting role at CCS.
What is something people don’t know about you?
I have been a Collingwood supporter since I was small, growing up in Melbourne: “Good ol’ Collingwood forever….”
Collecting your Child/ren Early Procedures
The Education Directorate and CCS take your children's safety seriously. Some key aspects of our safety procedures are -
- Update your contact details and authorisation to collect children regularly. It is essential that school staff always have up to date information.
- Front Office staff will need to sight you or your authorized person before your child/ren will be released into your/their care. This means that someone will have to walk into the front office to collect a child before 3pm.
- When you need to collect your child/ren before 3pm please contact front office staff and let them know as soon as possible.
- If you decide to drop in without notice to collect your child/ren, you are required to go to the front office and speak with staff. Front office staff will arrange to have your child/ren brought to the front office for you.
- If you are having someone else collect your child/ren, please let the front office know the person's name and ensure the person brings photo identification with them. Front office staff will call you if an unauthorised person arrives to collect your child/ren.
Thank you for your support.

The Push-Up Challenge
‘The Push-Up Challenge’ is back! We are very excited for students in years 5-10 to participate in ‘The Push-Up Challenge’ again from 5-28 June. This initiative is being led by our Student Leaders with the aim of holding a challenge for students and staff to connect as a school community, move their bodies, and engage with positive conversations about mental health. Last year we saw a huge engagement from our school community and with our combined totals, CCS was very competitive in the amount of push-ups completed in the ACT (we ranked as the number two school in the ACT, and number four overall for the ACT). We can’t wait to see what we can achieve together this year.
About the challenge:
‘The Push-Up Challenge’ puts the challenge out to all Australians to complete 3,249 push-ups from 5-28 June and to talk about mental health. This number of push-ups represents the 3,249 lives lost to suicide in 2022. Each day of the challenge there is a mental health fact given to participants to start a conversation about keeping our minds healthy, as well as our bodies.
During the month students will also have the opportunity to raise money for Lifeline Canberra. However, fundraising is optional element, with the main aim being to start conversations about mental health, get people active and connect as a school community.
Alternate movements such as star jumps, sit-ups or lunges are available for students to alternate or replace the push-ups. Students are also able to choose how many of the push-ups they do, they are not required to do 3,249 push-ups to participate.
Registering:
The challenge will be taking place during weeks 6-9 this term. Our student leaders will be visiting students soon to encourage them to sign up and participate in the challenge. Students will be registering on the challenge website and joining their house teams and under our school community (https://www.thepushupchallenge.com.au/fundraiser/carolinechisholmschool). If students haven’t participated before, this will prompt students to create an account and seek permission from an adult carer to participate. This will come to you from ‘The Push-up Challenge’ team in the form of an email. You can approve their participation and then your student will be able to count their participation in the school push-up tally. If students registered last year – they will still need to log into their accounts to activate their participation for this year and join a team under the CCS community.
More information about the challenge, as well as FAQs can be found here: https://www.thepushupchallenge.com.au/
We are really looking forward to the fun and community spirit this will bring the school as well as the important conversations students will have about their physical and mental health.

Kindergarten news
Literacy
In writing, we are practicing drawing pictures about books we read, and writing sentences that describe what we have drawn. To practice the sounds we learn in context, we use a sound card to help us write sentences that describe our picture.
We are also learning how to write a proper sentence. We have learned that we start writing in the top left corner of the page, use finger spaces between words and a full stop to show the end of an idea.
Numeracy
We have been using concrete materials to learn about numbers and how they can look different. The fruit and dinosaur counters are our favourite counters to use in maths lessons! We have been using them to count different ways to make 10, make patterns and practice recognising amounts.
Gross Motor
On Wednesdays we attend gross motor sessions in the hall. This is a fun way for us to develop our larger movements such as jumping, crawling, running and throwing. We are lucky enough to have some year 4 and year 6 helpers come to visit and make sure we are get the most out of our activities. This week we have been learning some different Indigenous games.
Art
We are super lucky to have Miss Lamb with us for most of this term. She is teaching us about colour and how we can use it in visual arts. We have learnt about warm and cool colours as well as primary and secondary colours to make our own colour wheel. We even got to mix our own colours on the desks!
Spotlight on Staff - Andrea Irving, 3/4 Teacher, 3-6 PLT Co-ordinator
How long have you worked at CCS?
10 years!
Describe your role at CCS.
I am a classroom teacher and PLT coordinator for years 3-6.
What do you enjoy about working with children/young people?
The “a-ha” moment when a child understands a concept and watching them develop as a person. I love it when they come back and see me after they have left the JC and tell me how they are going 😊
Describe your work in education in three words.
Challenging, rewarding, exciting
What are your strengths? What are you passionate about?
My strengths are building relationships with students so that we can achieve the maximum in their learning while they are in my class.
What is something people don’t know about you?
I only started teaching in 2013!
Year 8 News
CAMP KIANINNY
There is no better way to start the term than to head off on Middle Years Camp, Week 1!
This year was a great step into leadership as this cohort was the most senior group at the camp. Each activity/day group had a mix of Year 7 and Year 8 students, which was an excellent bonding opportunity for these two groups. The Year 8’s were really inclusive and involved in helping the Year 7 cohort unite and build new friendships.
This year, we were lucky enough to do the following activities:
- Monster Stand Up Paddle Boards
- Zip lines
- Archery
- Crate Stack
- Team Building games
- Orienteering
- Camp Fire
Every student made the most of their experience, and a special shout out to the MANY that faced their fears in this safe and supportive environment.
Camp Kianinny, Tathra, is also a holiday destination, so if you’re looking for a nice get away, I recommend reaching out here! The staff are so accommodating and really friendly.
This is the last camp opportunity for this cohort unless students elect to do Outdoor Education during their senior years.
OzTag Gala Day’s
Taking the Year 8 cohort out into the community is always a positive experience. Their presentation while out in the community is often mature, respectful and they showcase what teamwork really looks like.
The Year 8 boys, plus two Year 7 boys, had a great day on Tuesday 14th May. Their biggest win of the day was 9-0, they had two draws, another win of 6-2 and an unfortunate loss 1-9 to the team that ended up winning the comp on the day. A huge effort from the boys and such an impressive group of young men.
The Year 8 girls also had a successful day on Wednesday 15th May, with their biggest win being 6-1, they won two other games, drew one game, with their only loss of the day being to the team that also won the comp on the day.
SCIENCE
Year 8 students are learning about the transfer and transformation of energy and energy efficiency. This is leading them to their assessment which focuses on how a sustainable house performs with different design features. There has been a lot of practical elements to this unit and that will continue as they test how windows, interior and exterior choices impact the thermal efficiency of a house. They can also get creative in this task as they design their own house while contemplating and putting into action what they have learnt.
Reminders for Term 2, 2024
- PUSH UP CHALLENGE starts this term! CC classes will have all the information on how to sign up for this challenge to raise awareness about Mental Health in Australia.
- Shakespeare Week 5 incursion; please bring back permission notes to the English team in relation to the ‘Shakespeare is Dead’ incursion for Friday of this week (Week 5)!
- Right Place, Right Time is still really important. Would love to see a higher percentage of students attending all their classes on time and ready to learn.
- No Mobile Phone Policy is going quite well! We appreciate the work on the home front to support this new law that has passed. Friendly reminder that students cannot use their phones to purchase items from the canteen from now on.
- Uniform shop is open Thursday afternoons, however female or non-binary students are able to purchase school appropriate NAVY BLUE shorts with no logo on them if they prefer those over the school shorts. If the student cannot be in uniform, please provide them with a note and have them dress in colours as close to the school uniform as possible.
- Getting changed for practical HPE lessons: The red shirt can be purchased from the uniform shop, however we accept any change of top for hygiene purposes.
- Another term of Public Holidays with one gone this week and another one coming up on Monday 10th June
- Rubbish is becoming an issue again. There are copious amounts of bins around the school, so we would love to see students using these instead of leaving their rubbish on the ground.
